Who Are the Proles in 1984?

In "1984" the Proles also formed a social class within Oceania, the world of the book. There are three classes in this society. There is the Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the Proles. The Inner Party holds the most power in society. They control society, and because of that they understand the truth of Oceania - that reality is constructed and regulated to maintain order. The Outer Party is below them, but they still hold considerable power compared to the Proles. They put in the work to maintain the lies told by the Inner Party. They make sure their lies are believed to be true. However, their actions are monitored more than the Inner Party. The Thought Police, a force that monitors citizens to detect and prosecute anyone who contradicts the Party's beliefs, watches the Inner Party. Because of this, the Outer Party can do little about the actions of the Inner Party since they are always being watched, and could be arrested and tortured for going against the Party.

These two groups do not make up the majority of the population. Instead, most people in Oceania are Proles.
